Farm tourism is WV’s newest tourism product
The Department of Tourism Region VI in collaboration with the Province of Negros Occidental will conduct Fun Farms Orientation on August 4, 2017 at the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol Social Hall, Bacolod City.
The orientation targets to invite 50 farm owners/operators to join the activity and educate them on product development and management of farms for tourism purposes. Atty. Helen J. Catalbas, Director of DOT Region VI, said that Western Visayas is highlighting farm tourism as one of its newest tourism products.
“The region, mainly agricultural, has a lot of potential farms that can be developed into a tourist attraction. It has been strengthened through Republic Act 10816 or the Farm Tourism Development Act of 2016, which recognizes the importance of agriculture and tourism in the economic and cultural development of the country”, Director Catalbas emphasized. The law was authored by Deputy Speaker Congresswoman Sharon S. Garin.
Director Catalbas added that farm tourism accreditation process and requirements, agritectural (fusion of agriculture and architecture for farm tourism) and farm homestay operation will also be tackled during the activity, among others.
Western Visayas has five (5) existing DOT-accredited farms in the region; two of which are in Iloilo and three in Negros Occidental.
“We are looking forward to encourage more farm owners/operators to develop their farms for educational, production and recreational purposes. Farming is a noble job and its benefits cascades to the grassroots level and goes as high as five-star hotels and resorts and other tourism establishments”, Director Catalbas concluded.
