Ayala Malls Capitol Central starts No Plastic Wednesdays Campaign
The campaign, which started last March, aims to encourage merchants to reduce the use of plastics, such as shopping bags, as well as the single-use plastic drinking straws and plastic utensils.
“Our campaign is aligned with Ayala Land Inc.’s commitment to sustainability. We want to help in raising awareness about the how human activity is affecting our environment and encourage the people to take action to help,” said Stephanie Soriano, Marketing Manager, Ayala Malls Capitol Central.
Mall merchants are highly encouraged to use paper bags and other alternatives to plastic packaging on Wednesdays. “Customers can also do something to help by bringing their own eco bags and reusable containers, utensils, and straws – not only on Wednesdays, but any day of the week,” said Soriano.
Ayala Malls Capitol Central has also recently partnered with the Sea Waste Education to Eradicate Plastic (SWEEP) to educate customers about the harmful effects of plastics in the environment, specifically those disposed in the oceans.
“This is a start. We plan to make more steps in being sustainable,” said Soriano.
According to the new study of Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), the Philippines shopping bags usage is estimated to reach 48 million or around 17.5 billion pieces in a year. The country is ranked number three top polluter of plastics, which comes primarily from local plastic consumption.
Unless the continued dumping of plastics into the oceans is stopped, experts said that there would be one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish by 2025.
